On a Friday
afternoon, 3 weeks before our Journey House Christmas party, I got a call from our Santa
saying that he will not be able to come to our Christmas breakfast as planned on
December 18.
I gasped and held my breath for a moment and thought of what I would do.
That weekend my husband and I went to the theater
and I met an ELL teacher I knew from previous conferences.
I was then introduced to her new husband;
she had been a widow for many years raising an autistic son,
And much to my wonder and surprise,
He had a twinkle like Santa in his eyes,
His beard was soft, natural and white,
And I thought for a minute he could be right,
To play Santa to Los niños so dear,
So I decided to ask him if he could appear,
At our JH breakfast so not to disappoint,
All the kids who expect him, especially that night.
He came as a jolly old St Nick,
Smiled, sang, and played many tunes,
As pictures were taken upon his lap –
All smiles, no prunes!
And when he left he exclaimed with delight,
First he had to deliver toys tonight, and
That he would come back again next year,
Guitar, banjo, and reindeer.
This is a true story. I went home that
night and wrote my friend and asked if her husband could play Santa at our
breakfast.
I found out that he is a famous folk singer for the past years in Wisconsin –
David Drake.
He brought all his instruments: banjo, guitar, dulcimer, and sang Christmas
songs for over an hour, and then he took pictures with the kids.
Yes, I’m a grown up adult, but I do still believe in Santa!!
