Wiscon-Sing WISCON-SING is a 55-minute multimedia program which presents songs that introduce Wisconsin’s vibrant history to audiences of all ages in a music and visual performance enhanced with over 100 historic and scenic slides of our state. From the Native Americans and French explorers, European immigration, the work of lumberjacks and Great Lakes sailors, up to our present day farmers, Wisconsin comes to life in song.  David plays a variety of handmade and historic instruments, the kind our ancestors played, including Indian courting flute, mountain banjo, dulcimer, and concertina in addition to guitar to give the music an authentic flavor.  The audience is invited to participate, encouraged by special sing-along slides.

From the great north woods, the songs of lumberjacks and the great pine forests, of deep winters and fish-tales are found in songs like “The Lumberjack’s Alphabet" and “Jon  Jonson”.  Work songs of the sailors and river men are reflected in  “Where are you Bound” and “The Rivers of Wisconsin”. From the rich farmland, “When I First Came to this Land”, ”Many, Many Cows”, and “The Cranberry Bog” with everyone singing on the finale, “On Wisconsin!”   Heritage, family, comedy, and nostalgia all come alive in David’s concerts.

(Songs available on "WISCON-SING" Video, CD and Tape!)

This show is ideal for enhancing 4th grade Wisconsin History studies and meets many state standards for history education. Work together with other 4th grade classes in nearby schools and make this an annual event!

Gather by the  Waters A multimedia program created for the Wisconsin Lake Schooner Project as an outreach program introducing the history of the Great Lakes and immigration to these shores. For the days of glaciers to our modern ports, this programs flows like our rivers through time. Songs in seven different languages about the people who came to populate the western shores of Lake Michigan present a multicultural view of our forefathers. Slides and songs teach us that we are "all in the same boat".

Schools studying the Great Lakes are encouraged to visit the Wisconsin Lake Schooner "Denis Sullivan" in the Port of Milwaukee for an educational field trip and if possible, experience sailing on this historic schooner.  Call the Education Department at 414-276-7700 for information and access to a "Lakewatch Expedition" chest, which is loaned to schools and includes many maritime activities, Great Lakes educational activities, and a teacher's guide.  This kit includes David's "A Schooner Songbag" CD and music notation.

When I first came to this land

Join David's "Voyage of Discovery" with songs of the many people who "discovered" America, including a special section on the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

This program was developed for the Midwestern Library "Discover New Trails" program in the summer of 2004 and toured extensively around the Midwest. The program includes songs of the many people who came to this land, including "Shenandoah", Sweet Betsy from Pike", "Erie Canal" and newly written songs for the Corps of Discovery and Sakagawea.  This program does not yet have slides, but it can be developed with them if the interest by schools is great enough.

This show is ideal for enhancing 4th grade American western expansion studies and meets many state standards for history education.

The Illustrated Song Many popular folk songs have been illustrated as children's books.  Taking the concept full circle, David sings folk songs such as "This Land is your Land", "The Marvelous Toy", and "I've been working on the Railroad" while the pages from the corresponding children's books are projected so the audience can sing along.  This program is great for children's reading events and schools encouraging literacy.

This multimedia program was created with the help of the John Stewig Collection at the Center for Children's Literature, Hedberg Library of  Carthage College in Kenosha WI.

School Residencies
and Workshops
David presents residencies including songwriting, folk music instruments, environmental studies and state history in extended-stay residencies. Within an hour the students go from discussing what they know about a pre-selected topic to a song using their own words.  An end-of-residency assembly presents the students singing their own songs along with David for the whole school.
